"COLORS OF COVID"

With social distancing recommendations and stay-at-home orders in place, many are spending more times in their homes. For some, boredom hits. For others, it is a time to get creative. Many have taken up activities like DIY projects, home improvement, and repurposing clothing. One of the biggest quarantine activities became tie dying clothing as it is easy and fun way to transform clothing on a budget. Not to mention, tie dyed prints were projected to be one most popular trends of Spring/Summer 2020 by WGSN.

WGSN reported trends for S/S 2020 when looking at specifically at Gen Z and Millennial influenced styles. The members of Generation Z currently range from ages 5-25 years old and members of the millennial generation consist of people who are ages 25-40. Gen Z and Millennial consumers have very distinct consumption patterns heavily rooted in the use of technology and social awareness. The consumption behavior of these two generations can be summarized in the want for immediate gratification and convenience, brand affinity built around social engagement and gravitation toward a purpose, cause and mission statements behind products. It is no surprise that the avid social media users have more time to engage, post and scroll through their accounts during a time of lockdown from public places. When considering Gen Z and Millennial consumers, they have “an appetite for statement looks and expressive fits” that include bright colors, tie-dye and large scale graphic prints. On the other hand, there remains the need for neutrals that have been worked into the wardrobe. WGSN’s “Women’s Colour S/S 20” article describes muted tones “act as an anchor point to underpin the rest of the palette”.

When creating the look, it was important to capture the "DIY" element as well as the tie-dye trend. I created this look by taking a pair of pants I had sewn myself along with a homemade bleach-dyed sweatshirt.
