"ALL DRESSED UP WITH NOWHERE TO GO"

It was no surprise that with self-isolation and quarantine meant big life events were to be postponed, moved online or even cancelled. Prom is one of the biggest events that takes place in a high schoolers life. It can often be thought of as a rite of passage symbolizing one significant part of life ending and a new stage of life beginning. It is a social gathering for some students, for others it is their favorite memory of being 18 years old.

In order to create an event that was special in light of the circumstances, some big names, brand and retailer came up with ways to make the night happen. Some celebrities even got in on the event including John Krasinski who posted in a video to his YouTube channel titled "Some Good News" where he hosted a virtual prom livestream. Guests also made appearance including Billie Eilish, Chance the Rapper and the Jonas Brothers. Retailers and brands also chimed in. Windsor and American Eagle paired with sponsors such as Teen Vogue, Tik Tok and SGN to create a virtual prom hosted on May 14, 2020. Participants were able to sign up online and were not required to bring a date or wear a dress or suit, even though they were more than welcome to do either or both. The online prom was hosted by Jerry Harris and featured performances by singer, Tinashe and Tik Tok star, Addison Rae.

When considering trends for prom season during S/S 2020, WGSN provided insight. In regard to retail markets being affected by proms being cancelled, dresses suffered a massive decline in sales and were among the most heavily discounted items in stores this Spring. As far as colors, from a trend perceptive formal dresses have seen a "newness in emerald, blush, red and icy blue shades". When creating my look, I was inspired by the bold red and decided to combine one of the most popular colors in a maxi dresses projected for this year. Flame scarlet was also one of the Pantone colors predicted to be on trend for New York Fashion Week S/S 2020.
